August 15th, the
Norwegian Aviation Museum in concert with volunteers
from Dyrøya and Tromsø, recovered the tail of a
Fw200 Condor outside Dyrøya. The Condor was shot
down May 29th 1940 by a RAF Hurricane
from 46. Sqdn.
The recovery of the tail
section is part of our long cooperation with the
Deutsches Teknikmuseum, Berlin. Earlier the main
wreckage was raised from Hommelvik close to
Trondheim, and 2009 extra parts for the project was
recovered from the mountain Kvitanosi near Voss. The
Berlin Museum has hopes that we will see a Condor
displayed in Berlin in due time. The rebuild of the
tail section is done by volunteers from Lufthansa in
Hamburg and the wings are rebuilt by a team from
Airbus in Bremen.
Because of the extra weight of
the silt collected inside the tail and also because
of corrosion to the framework, a breakage occurred
causing the tail to come loose from the aft fuselage
when lifting from the seabed. We have hopes that the
aft portion of the fuselage can be recovered at a
later date.
