Dassault Mirage III E
Strike Fighter
The Mirage was designed to meet a 1954 French requirement for a
small all-weather supersonic interceptor. Two concepts of the
Mirage were tested but abandoned in favour of the larger Mirage
III that first flew in November 1956. The type went into
widespread production for the French forces and for export, and
became a considerable commercial success for Dassault.
The basic variants are the Mirage IIIB two-seat trainer, the
Mirage IIIC single-seat interceptor, the Mirage III E
single-seat strike fighter and the Mirage III R reconnaissance
aircraft.
The stored Mirage III E, owned by
the Armed Forces Museum, is a gift from the French Air Force
commemorating the establishing of the Norwegian Aviation Museum
in Bodø.
