The Supermarine Spitfire is a single seater fighter plane and one of the most well-known planes of World War II. The prototype took to the air for the first time in 1936. When production was brought to a halt in 1947, about 20,300 of them had been built, including 40 different versions of the aircraft. Spitfires were in the front line throughout the war and were under constant development in step with new technology and operative requirements.
Two Norwegian fighter squadrons were established in England during World War II, 331 Squadron on July 21, 1941 and 332 Squadron on January 15, 1942. Both squadrons were equipped with Spitfires, and they shot down altogether 116 enemy planes. A further 34 were recorded as probably shot down, and 124 were damaged. After the war, the squadrons were transferred to Norway, and the final flight of a Norwegian Airforce Spitfire took place on March 25, 1954.
