Exhibition Aircraft

North American F-86 K Sabre

United States, day fighter

The North American XP-86 took to the air for the first time in 1947. The aircraft was very manoeuvrable and could achieve supersonic speeds when diving. In September 1948, the existing speed record was broken when the aircraft reached a speed of 1,080 k.p.h. It was brought into operative service in 1949. A great number of F-86E's were in use during the Korean War. Model F appeared on the scene in 1952. It was fitted out as a fighter-bomber with a more powerful engine than previous models, and the wing construction and weapons system had also been modified.

The Norwegian Airforce took over their first F86-F Sabres in 1957. Gradually all F-84G Thunderjets were replaced by Sabres. Using the F-86F also involved the possibility of carrying nuclear weapons. In 1967, the aircraft was replaced as an Airforce fighter by the Northrop F-5.
