![]() Republic F-84G Thunderjet United States, day fighter The prototype of the F-84, the XP-84, took off for the first time in February 1946. When production of the F-84 was brought to a close in 1953, 4,457 had been built, including 6 different versions. The Korean War and the tense political situation in Europe brought about a need for aircraft that could carry tactical nuclear weapons. The solution to this problem was the F-84G. It was equipped with a more powerful engine that provided greater speed, range and armaments capacity. In 1952, the Airforce received the first F-84G's as part of the US military aid programme. No other aircraft has served in such great numbers in Norway. All of the 206 planes were delivered over a period of 5 years, and between 1952 and 1954, 6 squadrons were equipped with F-84G's. This meant a tremendous boost for Norway in terms of pilot and technician training. In June 1960, the last Thunderjet was withdrawn from active service. ![]() ![]() |
