AircraftLockheed CF-104 Starfighter
United States, trainer two pilots in tandem, fighter bomber, interceptor
The prototype, XF-104, took to the air for the first time on February 7, 1954. The YF-104A was the first aircraft to achieve a speed of MACH 2. There were over 20 different versions of the Starfighter. The US Air Force had a few F-104?s, but in Europe, the F-104G was to become the most important fighter in most NATO countries in the 1960?s and 70?s. In August 1963, the aircraft carrier USS "CROATAN" arrived in Norway with 23 F-104?s assigned to 331 Squadron in Bodø.
In 1972, the Airforce purchased 22 used CF-104?s from Canada. The aircraft were fitted out as fighter-bombers intended for combat with surface vessels, and were assigned to 334 Squadron in Bodø. On April 22, 1983, Colonel Aamoth and General Schibbye took off on what was to be the final flight of a Norwegian Starfighter. By then (C)F-104's had been in Airforce service for 20 years, and had been airborne for altogether over 100,000 hours.
