![]() Bell UH-1B Iroquois United States, medium lift helicopter Between 1959 and 1987, over 10,000 Bell UH-1's were built, including 20 different versions. Originally, this type of helicopter was built for the US Army and intended for ambulance and general transport purposes, but it was also adapted to various combat, rescue and anti-U-boat operations. It's most important task has proven to be tactical troop transport. The Norwegian Airforce received the UH-1B in 1963 as military aid and transport support for the Army. Subsequently, several more were purchased and altogether 35 military UH-B1's were registered in Norway. Activities were organized on the basis of three squadrons, 339 in Bardufoss, 719 in Bodø and 720 at Rygge. Rescue services, ambulance flights and military transport were the primary tasks assigned to these squadrons. In 1978-79, a Norwegian helicopter wing was assigned to UN service for UNIFIL in the Lebanon. The last Airforce UH-B1 was finally phased out on February 16, 1990. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
